If you walk through the hallways of Gan Shalom on any given morning, you will hear a beautiful symphony of laughter, singing, and the busy sounds of children exploring their world. We are blessed with a wonderful present moment: a vibrant, warm, and nurturing community defined by joy, excellence in education, and deeply connected families. But this beautiful reality is not by chance. It is the intentional result of years of carefully cultivating a strong foundation and a thoughtful language of communication, both of which mirror the sacred Jewish values at the heart of our congregation and early childhood community.
As you read in Monday’s exciting announcement from our leadership team, our present moment just got a whole lot brighter with the confirmation of our $4 million state grant. Being one of only two schools in Nassau County selected for this honor is an incredible milestone, and it has given all of us at Gan Shalom a beautiful invitation to do something wonderful: to dream.
Dreaming Across Generations
To understand where this dream is taking us, we have to look at where it began. As I reflect on this monumental news, I keep coming back to a favorite children’s book of mine, A Basket Full of Figs by Ori Elon.
The book beautifully mirrors our exact journey of the past and present. It adapts a classic Talmudic tale from our history into a modern story for families today, making it the perfect book to highlight in this moment of transition. In it, an old man plants a fig tree. When asked why he works for fruit he may never live to taste, he answers that just as his ancestors planted for him, he plants for those who will come after. Years later, he proudly brings a basket of sweet figs to the emperor, showing the reward of faith and generational love.
This story perfectly captures the essence of this exciting new chapter for Gan Shalom.
Cultivating the Next Chapter
That forward-looking mindset is exactly how we turn our dreams into reality. This state funding is our collective “basket full of figs.” Just like the updated tale in the book, it bridges our history with our modern lives. It proves we can trust the vision of those who preceded us, and that future families can trust the one we are building right now as we plan our new classrooms, library, STEAM room, and outdoor play spaces.
As leadership begins to dream and plan for what’s ahead, I am filled with immense hope. Together, we are creating a space that truly reflects our community’s core values.
