Kesher Chadash (RSNS Teen Connections)
FAQ

Q. What the heck is Kesher Chadash (RSNS Teen Connections)?

Kesher Chadash (RSNS Teen Connections) was formerly known as "Upper School". It is an exciting and wide-ranging way for our teenagers (grades 8-12) to stay connected to each other, our synagogue, and Judaism in general. Our programs all fall into at least one of three core categories:

  • Social Action: Not only do students get community service credits (if required by their public school), but they see the connection between their Jewish identity and helping to make the world a better place. Possible programs include fundraising for Israel and Jewish environmental groups, volunteering with disabled children, interviewing Holocaust survivors and serving guests at a NYC soup kitchen.
  • Creative Learning: Utilizing music, art, and spirited conversations, teens engage in a frank exploration of Jewish responses to teen issues such as sex, substance abuse, pop culture and the pressures of being a 21st century teenager. We also explore interesting topics (Jewish feminism, environmentalism, comparative religions, etc.) at a more challenging and dynamic level than was possible in Hebrew school.
  • Fun Stuff: Just as important as new knowledge is the ability to create community through more informal get-togethers such as trips, parties, and other fun activities throughout the year.

Q. When do we meet?

Members will meet approximately twice a month, usually on Sundays from 12 noon - 2 p.m. (including lunch). Certain events (trips, parties, etc) will meet at other times. Please check the Kesher Chadash calendar for details. Please note that although we would love to have 100% attendance at every session, we recognize that teens in this community are involved in a wide-range of important extra-curricular activities. The goal is to come when you can, and get the most out of it when you do. Of course, the more friends that show up, the more fun we have!

Q. How much does it cost?

$180 covers all on-site events, including food where appropriate. Off-site events may have additional costs, but many will be subsidized by the registration fee.

Q. What's new?

Some of our most exciting innovations:

  • Cyber-Schmooze™ - we'll toss around a fun and challenging what would you do? ethical dilemma, and build community through the power of AOL.
  • Teens can reach out to the larger community by writing for the Shaliyah or becoming a liaison to the synagogue board.
  • Teens can help out the “next generation” by creating a Bar/Bat Mitzvah Survival Guide.
  • Have a friend from another synagogue? Bring them along to any event! (as long as they pay)

Q. How do I join?

Simple! Just fill out a registration form, and mail it with your check for $180 per/teen to the synagogue. Then tape the calendar to your fridge (or your Palm Pilot™), and you're ready to go! Just call Cantor Eric at the synagogue -- (516) 627-6274) if you have any questions.

Remember: YOU make it happen!!
