Cantor Eric Schulmiller

Eric Schulmiller, a member of the American Conference of Cantors, was raised in Norwalk, CT. A classically trained pianist since the age of 7, Eric began studying jazz piano in high school and was named one of several promising young musicians by Downbeat Magazine in June 1990. Eric received his Bachelors of Music from the University of Miami (FL) in 1994, with a major in Studio Music and Jazz Piano. In the summer of 1994, Eric toured Israel with a Jewish blues band, and began his cantorial studies at the School of Sacred Music at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in 1995. During his four years of study at the College-Institute in Jerusalem and New York City, Eric wrote a variety of Jewish compositions, setting many liturgical and modern Hebrew texts to music. He has received several commissions, and his works have been performed at several prominent synagogues in Manhattan, including Temple Emanuel and Rodeph Shalom. He received his Masters of Sacred Music and was invested as cantor in the spring of 1999.

Eric is also committed to the Jewish work of social action, having played piano for the weekly HUC-JIR soup kitchen and serving as a member of Jews for Racial and Economic Justice, among other causes. Eric's wife Sarah works for the NYC office of LISC (Local Initiatives Support Corporation) - a non-profit organization which assists local community development groups in areas such as the creation of affordable housing. Sarah also sings in the Brooklyn Jewish Community Chorus and volunteers for Planned Parenthood. Eric's sister Tara is a real estate agent living in the Washington, DC area, and his parents belong to Congregation Ramat Shalom in Plantation, Florida, a Reconstructionist synagogue where his mother Laura recently celebrated her Bat Mitzvah, and his father Joel sings in the volunteer choir. In addition to serving as cantor at the Reconstructionist Synagogue of the North Shore, Eric has on occasion performed piano professionally at well-known venues in New York such as the Knitting Factory, and also enjoys Tai-Chi, juggling and gourmet vegetarian cooking.
